RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS AT SHC
Respectful Relationships Charter - Respectful Relationships Commitment statement
Why a whole school approach to Respectful Relationships?
Why was the Victorian Respectful Relationships curriculum and whole school framework developed?
The Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence recommended Respectful Relationships be introduced to all government schools (Recommendation 189) as a primary prevention framework. Evidence presented to the commission showed that family violence including sexual violence is the most pervasive form of violence perpetrated against women in Victoria.
What is primary prevention in the context of violence against women?
A primary prevention approach works to change the underlying social conditions that produce and drive violence against women and that excuse, justify or even promote it. It works across the whole population to address the attitudes, norms, practices, structures and power imbalances that drive violence against women. (Change The Story)
What drives violence against women?
There are 4 key drivers of violence against women
Condoning violence against women
Men’s control of decision-making and limits to women’s independence in public and private life
Rigid gender stereotyping and dominant forms of masculinity
Male peer relations and cultures of masculinity that emphasise aggression, dominance and control.
What drives 'prevention' of violence against women?
Challenge the condoning of violence against women
Promote women’s independence and decision-making in public life and relationships
Build new social norms that foster personal identities not constrained by rigid gender stereotypes
Support men and boys in developing healthy masculinities and positive, supportive male peer relationships.
What is the Respectful Relationships Curriculum?
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resources provide curriculum support for schools to further develop prosocial behaviour, resilience and social and emotional learning. The materials are designed to be taught at every level and offer sequential units aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 7 - 12: Health and Physical Education and Personal and Social Capabilities frameworks.
Topics 1–6 align with our commitment to our Mercy Values of respect, justice, service, hospitality, compassion and Visible Wellbeing SEARCH framework.
1. Emotional literacy (EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT)
2. Personal strengths (STRENGTHS)
3. Positive coping (COPING)
4. Problem-solving (RELATIONSHIPS / COPING AND HABITS AND GOALS)
5. Stress management (ATTENTION AND AWARENESS / COPING/ STRENGTHS)
6. Help-seeking (EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT)
Topics 7 and 8 and BRR Units 1 to 3 focus on gender and identity and positive gender relations, including some aspects of child abuse and protection education. SHC staff are trained in delivery, and content is always presented from the perspective and teachings of the Catholic faith. The Respectful Relationships curriculum reflects our commitment to making wellbeing visible for all people.
