Students travelled to the National Gallery of Victoria to visit Top Arts 2026, an exhibition showcasing outstanding VCE student artworks from across Victoria. As a premier event on the Victorian education calendar, Top Arts showcases a curated selection of outstanding VCE student artworks sourced from schools across the entire state. For our students, stepping into the professional gallery space immediately set a tone of prestige and serious artistic inquiry, transforming a regular school day into an immersive, real-world educational experience.

Upon entering the exhibition space, the students were treated to an exceptionally diverse and vibrant range of creative works, including painting, photography, sculpture, fashion, and digital media. The art explored themes such as identity, personal experiences, and contemporary issues, and created much discussion and admiration from the students. The sheer breadth of the mediums on display highlighted the evolving nature of contemporary Australian art and demonstrated to our students that there are no boundaries when it comes to self-expression and material experimentation, and our students gained much inspiration from this.

The excursion provided students with the opportunity to gain inspiration, develop their understanding of artistic techniques and creative processes, and experience contemporary Australian student art in a professional gallery setting. It was such a wonderful experience for the students to see such a high calibre of art from artists their age.

The excursion also gave them an invaluable opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom theory and elite artistic practice. By examining the finalised pieces alongside insights into the artists' preparatory folios, students were able to:

  • Gain Practical Inspiration: Seeing what is achievable at a VCE level served as a powerful motivator, inspiring our students to elevate their own creative ambitions and push the boundaries of their upcoming practical projects.
  • Demystify the Creative Process: Students gained a transparent look at how an initial concept undergoes rigorous trialling, documentation, refinement, and aesthetic problem-solving before it ever reaches a gallery wall.
  • Analyse Advanced Technical Skill: Up-close inspection allowed students to study brushwork, lighting techniques, material manipulation, and digital rendering choices that are difficult to appreciate fully through a textbook or computer screen.

Ultimately, this excursion provided the students with perspective. It proved that their voices, their age group and their contemporary ideas are powerful enough to command space in Australia’s premier art gallery, and we cannot wait to see what fantastic artwork they create in the future!
