Enrolments College Tours

We strive to embed and maintain a culture of respect, inclusion and safety where diversity is celebrated and the dignity of each member is protected. Embedding Respectful Relationships is not an add-on; it is central to our Catholic identity and student wellbeing. When we cultivate respectful relationships, we actively live out our Mercy values, transforming our College into a community where each person is known, respected and valued.

Sacred Heart is proud to be a Respectful Relationships Lead School. This whole-school initiative is supported by the Victorian Government, endorsed by the Victorian Catholic Education Authority and aligned with the vision and values of Mercy Education. In proud partnership with the Barwon Respectful Relationships Team, we work to foster a culture of equality, safety and wellbeing that empowers every individual to lead, influence and contribute to a healthy culture both within our College and beyond.

Respect and Safety

Our whole-school approach keeps students healthy and safe by embedding respect, fairness and kindness across all facets of College life.

Teaching vital life skills such as empathy, resilience, problem-solving and emotional regulation.

Proactively addressing stereotypes and challenging attitudes that can lead to disrespect, discrimination and violence.

Ensuring students are equipped with the confidence and knowledge of how and where to access the support needed.

Actively embedding a standard of kindness and fairness in our operational policies, classrooms and daily interactions.

Supporting staff wellbeing and professional development so all educators confidently teach and model respectful behaviours.

Partnering with families and the wider community to strengthen and mirror consistent messages of respect beyond the classroom.

Respectful Relationships Commitment

Our collective dedication to the Respectful Relationships principles is formalised in our College's Respectful Relationships Commitment Statement. This foundational document outlines our explicit pledge to maintain a safe, equal and inclusive environment, detailing the actionable accountability standards we uphold for every member of our College community. We invite you to read our full declaration of care and respect.

Contemporary and Evidence-Based Curriculum

The Resilience Rights and Respectful Relationships and Building Respectful Relationships curriculum provides sequential, age-appropriate units aligned with contemporary educational frameworks. By weaving in current research and contemporary language into all year levels, these resources foster prosocial behaviour and social-emotional growth.

The curriculum thoughtfully guides students to build healthy communication skills, understand affirmative consent and challenge gender stereotypes. Additionally, students are led to navigate complex themes relating to bullying, discrimination, hate speech and gender-based violence with care. By embracing and valuing the unique, diverse and intersectional experiences of every learner, we aim to cultivate a safe and supportive environment where all students are empowered to thrive.

Positive Behaviour

Every student has an inherent right to be treated with dignity. This principle forms the foundation of everything we do. That is why our student care system is designed to walk alongside every student, providing clear and supportive behavioural expectations through our Student Positive Behaviour Policy.

Our Restorative Approach

When a student makes a mistake or falls short of our community standards, we respond with a focus on learning and growth referred to as Accountability with Dignity.

Instead of just issuing a penalty, this restorative method encourages students to:

  • Take genuine responsibility for their actions.
  • Understand how their behaviour impacts others and their relationships.
  • Work actively to repair any harm caused and restore positive connections within the College community.

This ensures that even when facing challenges, every student feels valued, respected and supported as they learn from their missteps.

Proactive Bullying Prevention

We have a zero tolerance for bullying, harassment, cyber-bullying, discrimination, racism or violence. We believe the most effective way to address bullying is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We take a proactive, whole-school approach to build a culture of safety and respect through three key initiatives.

Social and Emotional Learning: We explicitly teach students what bullying is, how to respond assertively and how to develop emotional resilience, problem-solving skills and conflict-resolution strategies.

Empowering Upstanders: We teach our students to be active upstanders rather than passive bystanders, giving them the confidence to safely speak up or seek help when they witness unfair treatment.

The Respectful Relationships Initiative: As a partner in this initiative, we weave lessons on gender equality, mutual respect and positive communication into daily school life.

Cross-Age Mentoring: Through our peer support programs, senior students mentor and support younger students, fostering a friendly, familiar network across year levels.

Strong Family Partnerships: We collaborate closely with families and guardians, recognising that keeping students safe and supported requires a team effort between home and school.

Celebrating Diversity: We regularly highlight and honour our students' diverse backgrounds to build a community rooted in mutual respect.

Student-Led Safety Teams: Our students actively participate in leadership discussions about wellbeing, address concerns and design student-led anti-bullying campaigns.

National Awareness: The College participates annually in the National Week Against Bullying and Violence to keep conversations around safety and kindness at the forefront.

Regular Policy Updates: We consistently review our prevention strategies and digital technology policies to ensure they remain highly effective in a changing world.

Our ultimate goal is to maintain a respectful and encouraging learning environment that protects student wellbeing, fosters self-esteem and ensures every single learner feels they truly belong.
