Earlier this year, our VCE Unit 1 Legal Studies class had the opportunity to participate in a Mock Trial at the Geelong Magistrates Court. The experience gave us the chance to step out of the classroom and experience what it is actually like to be involved in a courtroom.
Before the trial, we spent time preparing for our roles with proper prosecution and defence lawyers by learning about courtroom procedures, reading through witness statements and becoming familiar with legal terminology. We studied the details of the case carefully so that we understood the evidence and could accurately represent our assigned roles. This preparation helped us feel more confident when it came time to perform the trial.
Everyone involved in the Mock Trial had a specific role to play including barristers, witnesses, solicitors and jury members. Taking on these roles meant that we had to move beyond simply understanding the case and actually think and behave like the people we were representing. The barristers had to prepare questions and arguments while the witness had to remember their statements and respond to questioning. The jury had the responsibility of listening carefully to the evidence and considering whether the prosecution had proven its case.
Being able to present arguments, question witnesses and listen to evidence in a real courtroom was very different from completing these activities in the classroom. Standing in front of a judge and presenting a case made the experience feel much more realistic and showed us how important confidence, preparation and communication are in the legal profession. It was also interesting to see how seriously everyone had to take on their role even in a mock trial.
The experience helped deepen our understanding of important legal principles, including criminal negligence and the burden of proof. Instead of simply learning definitions from a textbook we were able to see how these principles actually influence the way a criminal case is presented and decided. We also gained a better understanding of how different people within the court work together to ensure that a trial is conducted fairly.
Overall, participating in the mock trial made legal studies feel much more practical and engaging. Studying legal concepts in a classroom is important but experiencing a trial allows us to understand how those concepts operate in the real world. The mock trial challenged us to communicate, think critically and work as a team while giving us an insight into what happens inside a courtroom. It was an experience that brought our learning to life and gave us a much greater appreciation for the complexity of the legal system.
