The Combined Schools Musical, Newsies, recently concluded after a fantastic run of performances hosted by St Joseph's College. Set in New York at the turn of the 20th century, Newsies tells the inspiring true story of a group of young newspaper sellers who unite to stand up for fairness and justice.
Filled with high-energy dance numbers, memorable songs and a powerful message about courage and teamwork, the production showcased the incredible talent and dedication of students from Sacred Heart College, St Joseph's College and Clonard College.
Having rehearsed consistently since the beginning of the year, the cast, orchestra and production team demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment and collaboration. We congratulate all of our students on this outstanding achievement and thank everyone who contributed to another successful Combined Schools Musical.
Newsies is a musical set in New York City at the beginning of the twentieth century, and tells the incredible story of young Jack Kelly and his company of newsboys, who refuse to stand aside while the notorious newspaper baron, Joseph Pulitzer, increases the prices on delivery of newspapers. With its catchy songs, unbelievable dancing and message concerning the necessity of struggle for justice, this show is really full of energy. The preparation process for the show lasted many months and included lots of successful rehearsals. It was wonderful watching the efforts that the actors made to master their dancing, singing and acting skills, with the opening night proving that all these efforts brought us success.
As my final School Production, Disney's Newsies was one of the greatest shows I've ever been able to take part in. Not only was I the most senior student in the cast, celebrating my 18th birthday throughout production week, but I also got to work alongside some amazing individuals. Performing as Medda Larkin, I was so grateful to work alongside such an incredible production team. I have made so many connections with these staff members, and I'm super grateful to have also connected with fellow production members externally who are in the Geelong Theatre industry. I'm so glad that I got to bring Medda to life through my experience, knowledge and personal training across my theatre, vocal and dancing abilities. I appreciate everyone who came to see the performance, and I hope that our story of Newsies was enjoyed by all.
I would also like to thank my family and friends for all your support. For coming to the show, clapping or cheering your heart out in a seat, or even just a simple congratulations throughout the school or over a message, I appreciate the support so much.
My advice to any student in the Performing Arts, or anyone interested in giving it a go: take every opportunity you can get! Throughout my last six years at Sacred Heart, I've had the privilege to do so many things, and without determination, enthusiasm, encouragement, and confidence, I would not be the person that I am today. Sacred Heart has allowed me to connect with so many wonderful people, make lifelong friends, and create memories that I will value forever.

Newsies has been one of the most joyous experiences of acting I have been a part of thus far. From the incredible friendships to the kindness of staff, I truly couldn't have asked for a better show experience.
The auditions began with dancing and then individual opportunities to sing and act. Nerve racking, but exciting! The rehearsals were intense, but the commitment shown from cast and crew was all the support we needed. The shows were the ultimate highlight, so much love and joy poured into a full week of final rehearsals and 3 fun shows.
I played the role of Katherine Plumber, an enthusiastic reporter who has a drive for change and love. Being one of my dream roles, it was an absolute treat to play her. She sings one of the best songs in the show, and ultimately saves the day with her intelligence.
The support I received from family, friends and fellow cast and crew was unmatched. I STRONGLY suggest doing a school show at least once - you won't regret it!
