Students who participated in the Timor Kolega Immersion experienced a profoundly eye-opening journey into the heart of Timor-Leste, engaging directly with the lives, culture and history of Australia’s closest international neighbours. Designed to foster cultural understanding and meaningful cross-border connections, the immersion program provided student participants with a rare opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, gain new perspectives on global education and build lasting relationships with local community partners.
Throughout the trip, travellers immersed themselves in both the poignant history and the vibrant day-to-day community life of Timor-Leste. The trip took participants to Baucau to visit the Canossian Training and Development Centre (CTID). At CTID, our students actively engaged with the local community, contributing to daily activities, sharing stories, and forging genuine friendships with the young women at the centre. The opportunity to give back, support local initiatives, and share joyous moments across cultural and linguistic barriers proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the entire experience.
Living alongside the local community allowed participants to gain a firsthand understanding of the stark differences in lifestyle, educational access, and resources between Timor-Leste and Australia. For many, this immersive exposure served as a powerful reminder of the everyday privileges often taken for granted back home - basic comforts and educational opportunities that many around the world can only wish for. Despite the resource disparities, the warmth, generosity and strong sense of community displayed by the people of Timor left an indelible impression on the traveling cohort.
Returning home to Australia, participants carried back not only a treasure trove of unforgettable memories, but also a renewed sense of gratitude and deep-rooted international friendships. The Timor Kolega Immersion ultimately demonstrated the powerful impact of community-focused travel, offering a life-changing experience that went far beyond typical tourism. For anyone passionate about exploring the world, understanding diverse cultures, and building authentic, long-lasting partnerships with global communities, this program stands out as an extraordinary, highly recommended journey of personal growth and mutual respect.
I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Timor Kolega Immersion this year. This immersion was such an insightful trip into the lives of our closest international friends, learning about the way they live, the education they gain and the history of Timor was such an incredible experience and will never be forgotten. This experience was very eye opening and makes you extremely grateful for the many things in our lives we take for granted that other people can only wish for.
This immersion is something I would highly recommend to anyone who loves seeing the world, learning about new places and forming strong connections and friendships with our community partners.

My time in Timor was an incredibly meaningful and eye opening experience.
From visiting CTID in Baucau as well as visiting the resistance museum in Dili, I was able to embrace a new culture and meet the most amazing people. I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back, help others, and contribute to the CTID community and share memories with the girls there.
It taught me to appreciate the things I often take for granted at home. Coming back to Australia, I felt extremely fortunate for the memories, and especially the friendships I made along the way.
