Our Design Futures Lab and STEAM departments have had a lot of interesting things happen! Here is a brief recap of the past few weeks in this space:
Students hosted a Discovery Day workshop blending tech and ecology to create a mural of endangered species, using AI tools in Photoshop and Illustrator to imagine scenarios where species survive and thrive. A second session focused on circular design, where participants transformed deadstock Oroton bags into new, handcrafted accessories. Students applied conservation research and climate data through image generation while exploring material reuse and design thinking. The workshops demonstrated how technology, regenerative practices and creativity combine to inspire positive environmental action.
Design Futures Lab students are completing the Fred’s Tiny House University Online Build Course, designing and constructing the tiny house in the Makerspace. Year 9 Visual Communication students joined in by design and model making, integrating architectural design with practical environmental considerations.
Students have undertaken workshops in the New Materials Lab, exploring recycled, biocomposite and grown materials. Current investigations focus on bio-textiles and reducing plastic within textile systems, exploring regenerative design methodologies, material innovation and community collaboration through hands-on experimentation.
Students attended an online presentation by Lisa Barbara, ESG and Sustainability Manager across the brands at Cult. Lisa introduced students to Matek, an innovative biomaterial developed through significant research and technological investment. Sincere thanks to our industry mentor and past collaborator Myra Murtagh for facilitating this opportunity.
