Celebrating World Teachers’ Day: Honouring the Heart and Soul of Sacred Heart College

On Friday 30 October, our school community joins together with communities across the globe to celebrate World Teachers’ Day. It is an opportunity to pause, reflect and give heartfelt thanks to the educators who dedicate themselves each day to shaping the minds, hearts and futures of our students.

When reflecting on the profound impact of teaching, two insightful authors come to mind. Christopher Gleeson SJ, in ‘Releasing the Angel – Saluting all who Strive to Teach’, describes education as a profession that seeks to free people, giving each individual the care and the wherewithal to achieve their full potential. Our best teachers are enablers; they liberate the mind and imagination, empowering their students to take wing and soar.

Similarly, Parker J. Palmer reminds us in, ‘The Courage to Teach’ that teachers choose their vocation for reasons of the heart. All good teachers share a defining trait: they weave a complex web of connections among themselves, their subjects, and their students, guiding young people on an inner journey toward more truthful ways of seeing and being in the world.

To our educators: thank you for all you do as a teacher, each and every day:

You inspire and cultivate dreams.

You facilitate thinking and engage curious minds.

You encourage risk and motivate students to reach further.

You listen, care, and foster meaningful relationships.

You work hard, organise, and create vibrant learning environments.

You enthuse, support those who are struggling, and walk alongside every learner.

You teach.

At Sacred Heart College, we provide an empowering, all-girls Catholic education where proud heritage meets innovation. Grounded in our Mercy values, our teachers continue the legacy that began 166 years ago with the Sisters of Mercy, who themselves once taught classrooms of 70 or more students while still fostering a deep sense of belonging. Today, our educators build upon that same foundation, supporting every student to develop the confidence, resilience and skills needed to lead a life of purpose. With an enduring commitment to social justice, our educators ensure that our students are not just prepared for the future, but are truly inspired to shape it.

Happy World Teachers’ Day to all our incredible educators!
