On Wednesday 9 September, our Year 12 VCE Vocational Major (VM) students will take part in Sacred Heart College’s annual Homeless Sleepout, an evening designed to raise awareness of homelessness and housing insecurity within our local Geelong community.
As part of their VCE VM studies, students will spend the night sleeping rough, experiencing some of the challenges faced by people who do not have access to safe and secure housing. While this experience cannot replicate the reality of homelessness, it provides students with an opportunity to step outside their usual circumstances, develop empathy and gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting people in our community.
Throughout the evening, students will participate in a range of interactive awareness activities designed to challenge their thinking and increase their understanding of homelessness, its causes and the support services available in the Geelong region. The night will provide opportunities for reflection, discussion and learning, while highlighting the importance of compassion, social responsibility and community action.
The experience will continue on Thursday morning, when students will put their learning into action by preparing and selling bacon and egg muffins. Funds raised will be donated to Sacred Heart College’s partner organisations, supporting their work with people experiencing disadvantage and homelessness.
The Homeless Sleepout is an important opportunity for our Year 12 VM students to demonstrate the values of empathy, respect and service that are central to our Sacred Heart community. We look forward to seeing our students engage thoughtfully with this experience and use their learning to make a positive contribution to our local community.
