2020 Maguire Celebration

A big thank you to all who attended the 2020 Maguire Celebration on Wednesday evening, in which we officially launched our 160th school year. We thank you especially for your patience and positivity despite the less than perfect weather and its unfortunate impact on the evening's planned events. We were so proud of our students and families who adapted to the challenging conditions and condensed program.

Congratulations to all the worthy recipients of both awards and scholarships. Well done also to the Fashion Parade participants, and the cast of Matilda who gave us a sample of what to expect from their show coming in May 2020.

We were also treated to a moving speech by our 2019 Dux, Xinyu (Lucy) Lyu. You can view this speech here: 2020 Lucy Speech

2020 Swimming Carnival

A fresh morning day greeted us this year, with some sun, and challenging weather. The arena was full of activity and colour for our annual Swimming Carnival at Kardinia Pool. Most of the morning was a sunny overcast day for a swim or jump in the diving pool.

As usual trials were conducted in the morning, with finals to follow in the afternoon. Unfortunately, this year we were unable to finish some of the relay finals and Diving Finals due to the unsafe weather conditions after lunchtime.

It was great to see so many students out having fun and participating in the different events offered to them throughout the day. The houses showed great colour and imagination through their different themes: Loyola – Royalty, Padua – Villains, Clairvaux – 80’s, Siena – When I Grow Up.

The fashion by the pool and house cheers were once again well supported by the house members.

A Helping Hand from Japan

We give thanks to two of our longer term exchange students, Miki Saito and Maon Sato (both now back in Akita), who have helped raise in excess of $5000 for those in need due to the recent Australian bushfires. They are sending half the funds to Sacred Heart and the other half to our Lady of Mercy in Heidelberg for distribution to appropriate charities to help the firefighters, people rebuilding as well as helping the rehabilitation of injured wildlife.

The students so greatly appreciated the care and hospitality that was extended to them when they were here that they initiated the fundraiser themselves, encouraging people at the Akita Station to donate.

We are very grateful to receive such a generous donation and look forward to sending the funds to needy charities as soon as possible.

Year 9 Science - Fast Cars

On Monday of week three a 20 metre care racetrack appeared out of nowhere in the upstairs Court Precinct. How did it work, and what was it for?

With the assistance of Miriam Glasby from Geelong Tech School, every year 9 core science student had the opportunity to race CO2-canister propelled cars along the track. Students enjoyed the explosive acceleration of the cars, but they were also able to collect valuable data. So as to meet our needs under the IB programme to conduct a scientific investigation, Miriam created special 3-D printed cars with slots that allowed us to vary their weights. Do heavier cars take longer to accelerate? Are lighter cars affected more by air resistance? Ask your year 9 daughter - by now she should have a graph and some conclusions to talk to you about.

Student Space

When this graphic design competition came up I just had to try. I have created some logo’s in the past at my primary school where I had the chance to design their STEMS logo. I have been learning how to use Photoshop and Illustrator from my dad as he is a graphic designer and I thought this competition was the perfect opportunity to really use those skills!

Inside the ‘M’ of my design I included many icons that I thought students would use throughout the classes in Makerspace, such as the brain, beaker, paintbrushes, cogs, the earth and creating tools.

Winning it means having the Makerspace logo presented on a poster at our school, on the Makerspace SHC website, video and assembly. I am proud of my work and happy that I get to share this logo with Sacred Heart College.

Mindfulness Video Bank

A Mindfulness Video Bank - an opportunity to organise, script and record mindfulness videos!

Here is another exciting Wellness for Learning initiative from our students! Angelina Hogan-Fox is excited to be creating a video bank of mindfulness videos. Every day after lunch we engage in mindfulness to improve our attention and awareness and therefore our wellbeing. We understand that sometimes it can be challenging or uncomfortable when first starting this practice and so we have come up with an idea to ease us all into it and to encourage ongoing practice!

Students will be able to go to this video bank to access pre-recorded, guided meditations that will leave them feeling present, peaceful and at ease. Staff will also be able to access these, and to use them in class.

We would love the help of anyone willing to organise, script, record or simply get involved with this initiative! If you have the skills and would be interested in helping out, please don't hesitate to contact Angelina at anhoganf@shcgeelong.catholic.edu.au or Ms Sarah Shepherd at sashephe@shcgeelong.catholic.edu.au.

Helping our Community be Well to Learn

This year, the Caring Communities Focus Group of leaders have been brainstorming some initiatives to promote positive physical and mental health. We are excited to launch a number of initiatives over the year.

We began last week at the Swimming Sports where we encouraged people to not only participate and be active but to also be sun smart and sun aware. Some upcoming initiatives to look out for include our mindfulness room at Discovery Day, continued growth of Visible Wellbeing, and the reintroduction of play boxes in the yard. This last of these will encourage students to be active during recess and lunch, promoting positive physical health. Through these initiatives, we are helping our community be well to learn!

Love Yourself Lavatories

Over the holidays, the student bathrooms had a little renovation! This was as a result of a student-led initiative titled Love Yourself Lavatories.

A group of Year 7 and 8 students from 2019 came up with this idea to repaint the toilet stalls and make the bathrooms a place of empowerment, so positive and empowering quotes have been painted on the doors as well. This was in an effort to reduce the negativity in the bathrooms and increase positive thoughts, energy, and perspective. So far we have heard many great things about the toilets from students and the staff!

SHC Borneo Expedition 2021

Sacred Heart College, in conjunction with Operation Wallacea, will soon be taking student expressions of interest for our 2021 Borneo Expedition (20 June – 5 July). Students spend a week in the rainforests of Borneo, and a week diving/snorkelling in the tropical Coral Triangle off the coast of Borneo. Students will be working with scientists who are experts in their field, and the data collected will be used in peer reviewed journals to justify conservation of Borneo’s incredible biodiversity.

This Borneo schools video gives a close approximation of what the expedition will be like. More information can also be found on the Opwall Borneo page.

On Thursday March 5 at 7.00pm Dr Tim Coles, founder of Operation Wallacea will give a parent information evening at Sacred Heart about the Borneo Expedition. To register for this event or request further information please contact SHC staff member Mr Dave Campbell

Uniform Expectations - Socks

All students should now be wearing the correct socks with their uniform. A reminder of which socks are to be worn are as follows:

  • PE Uniform - socks with a 6cm band, SHC branded or plain white
  • Summer Dress / Shorts - SHC dress socks
  • Blue Pants - Blue socks

We hope this information is clear and all students adhere to our uniform code.

Creative Writing Workshop - Mark Smith

Recently, the English staff were very lucky to able to spend an afternoon in a Creative Writing Workshop with author Mark Smith. Mark has written the Road to Winter trilogy, which is used in Literature Circles here with our students, and is a much loved series for young and older readers.

The staff engaged in writing activities to develop our own skills in creative writing and equip us with new inspiration when working with our students across all year levels in English.

PA40+ Fitness Testing and Screening Morning

An enthusiastic group of over seventy Year 10 PA40+ students had a great morning undertaking their Fitness Testing and Screening on Monday 24 February. Students completed a total of 12 physical tests aiming to test their anaerobic and aerobic fitness, strength, power and flexibility.

There were some outstanding individual results however the highlight was the participation, positive attitude and peer to peer encouragement demonstrated by all students - congratulations girls on your excellent contribution to making the morning such a success.

We sincerely thank Team Hemley and their motivating staff for facilitating the testing. Students will receive their results shortly which will enable them to further develop their personal health and fitness goals. These tests will be replicated at the end of Semester 1 providing an opportunity for students to check-in on their personal goals and reflect on their PA40+ journey.

PA40+ is a Year 10 subject that aims to equip students with the tools to instil healthy habits and attitudes towards physical activity. Currently students are being encouraged to explore what type of exercise motivates them and feels good for their body.

It’s all about planning healthy activity your way, every day.

The SHC PA40+ Community Class timetable for Term 2 will be released in the coming weeks and will include something for everyone, ranging from Pilates and Core and More, to Yoga and Express HIIT. We’re also excited to welcome back Team Hemley to SHC in Term 2. The team will be here on Wednesdays from 12pm-4pm offering express group fitness classes at lunchtime and after school, open gym sessions and individual consultations.

More information about the Term 2 SHC PA40+ Community Class timetable will be released shortly!
